This is what he looked like today when I hugged him:

Today was a very exciting day for me. Kevin Johnson came to my school and spoke to my students, and my students only, about education, teachers, basketball, dreaming big, and everything else that a former athlete, current Sacramento mayoral-candidate talks about to a group of inner-city kids. He was super sweet and personable, and even gave one of my students a $100 bill for answering a question correctly!! It made me so happy to see how happy my students were, and depending on how things go tomorrow, this may have been my "Oh yeah, this is why I'm doing this" moment.

After Kevin Johnson spoke, I had to give a speech. I am 1) not the type of person that likes to talk about myself in front of a crowd and 2) not the type of person that likes to give speeches, but I got through it, and now I can say that I gave a speech with former NBA all-star, almost NBA-champion Kevin Johnson sitting directly next to me. I am glad that I had the opportunity to do something like this because it just adds to my ever-growing list of "Things I have done this year that I never would have in a million years thought I could do". Tomorrow when I sit down with my student's parents for Parent-Teacher conferences I will add another "thing" to the list.

If I'm making first-year teaching sound really fun and easy, then I must have misspoke somewhere, because it's hardly fun and definitely not easy. It wasn't very fun last week when a group of 8th grade boys let a dozen frogs loose in my room, and I didn't find it easy to dissuade my students from getting drunk off the isopropyl alcohol that we used in our "Density Lab" today. But, there are some really good, really sweet, really deserving kids at my school, and they make everything worthwhile.

That can't be his real hairline.
