Dad

On Thursday my Dad got hit by a car while riding his bike home from work. He had a really bad compound fracture of both the tibia and fibula in his right ankle, pelvic bone and pubic bone fractures, a rib fracture, and some shattered vertebrae. Luckily he was wearing a helmet, but he stil has small bruises on his brain. Luckily, it wasn't a hit and run, and even though the guy who hit him didn't have a cell phone on him, he flagged someone down to call 911. This morning the guy was still in custody because they were waiting for the results of blood tests. I am sitting in the ICU with my Dad right now. My Mom is at home sleeping because she stayed up all last night and today. He has been intubated and drugged since he came in, so we haven't been able to speak to him. He is responsive, and can squeeze our hands with both his right and left hand if we ask him to. He can also wiggle the toes on his left foot. The first thing that they did when he came in was operate on his right ankle because it was a really bad fracture and he was losing a lot of blood. He now has huge pins and a brace sticking out of it, and they're trying to figure out how they're going to remove these pins so that he can have an MRI before having spinal surgery. His blood pressure was low during the first night, but it's normal now, after being on blood pressure drugs all day.

This whole situation feels like an awful nightmare that I am hoping that I wake up from as soon as possible. Thursday was the worst day of my life. My Dad was an hour late coming home, so my Mom went out to look for him and drove up to the scene where it had happened. I feel sick every time I think of this. I am so devastated.
